The Pursuit Of Happyness

Notable Features: Narrative and Locations

Directed by Gabriele Muccino, The Pursuit Of Happyness (2006) is a family drama, starring Will Smith as the Protagonist character. Based on a true story, the narrative follows Salesman Chris Gardener (Smith) who has invested a lot of his time, money and effort into a futuristic device, only to find that he is struggling to sell the device to make the money back. During this process, he loses all of his money, his house and his wife, and is left to take care of his Son, with whom he had never really bonded with before. Gardener embarks on a pursuit of happiness.

This film has close links with our Major Project Film, Contract as they are both loosely based upon an incident in a male’s life that could change his luck for the best or for the worst. In both films, bad luck ensues (In Contract, Alan loses his Father and is facing repossession). That is, until he is given a contract by a mysterious being (Mr. Coral) which could turn his luck into good luck. This happens in The Pursuit Of Happyness (the good luck is his Son, Christopher).

The locations are also very similar to the locations that will be used in Contract, i.e. a café, home scenes (bedroom, kitchen etc) and scenes in a park.
